Blocking and returning 600,000 USDT stolen from a well-known exchange service

As a result of unauthorized access to the Telegram account of a representative of a well-known exchange service, the attackers replaced the wallet address for the client. As a result, a transaction in the amount of 1,000,000 USDT was sent directly to the fraudsters' wallet. After the client contacted them, TRACE specialists quickly conducted an on-chain analysis of the movement of crypto assets, identified the key wallets involved in the scheme, and established the route of the funds. The team worked with law enforcement agencies to register a criminal case and also communicated with the issuer of the Tether token. As a result of these rapid actions, 600,000 USDT was blocked in a cold wallet on the Tron network. The remaining funds — 400,000 USDT — were quickly blocked in wallets controlled by the attackers on the KuCoin crypto exchange. Thanks to the coordinated actions of TRACE analysts and lawyers, a court decision was obtained to reissue and return the stolen assets to the victim. Technical and legal procedures for their actual return are currently underway. This case proves once again that rapid analysis, legal expertise, and strategic interaction with token issuers make it possible to effectively stop and return lost crypto assets.

Defense of a licensed exchange service in a case involving fraudulent transactions worth USD 4 million

The TRACE team was approached by a licensed exchange service with a request to investigate the outcome of a large transaction involving the purchase of USDT worth million via cashless payment. After the payments were made, it turned out that the transfers to the service's accounts were made by fraudsters using the bank's overdraft funds, i.e., funds that did not belong to the senders. Subsequently, the bank filed financial claims against the exchange service, as the funds were transferred to its accounts. TRACE's legal team responded quickly, preparing a complete package of supporting documents for the bank proving the legality of the licensed service's actions. At the same time, the company's analysts conducted a detailed on-chain analysis of USDT asset movements, identifying the wallets and individuals involved in the fraudulent transaction. Thanks to coordinated actions and cooperation with law enforcement agencies, a swift and impartial investigation was conducted, as a result of which the organizers of the scheme were notified of suspicion and placed on an international wanted list. All charges and claims of the foreign bank against the licensed exchange service were completely dropped. The case became an example of how the combination of legal practice and TRACE's on-chain analytics allows not only to defend the client's interests, but also to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Unlocking 100,000 USDT in a client's account on a well-known crypto exchange

The TRACE team was contacted by a client who had 100,000 USDT blocked in their account on the WhiteBIT crypto exchange. The client reported that the assets had been transferred to their personal Web3 wallet from the Bybit exchange on the Arbitrum network, after which the user made a transaction through a decentralized bridge service to exchange tokens on the Ethereum network (ERC-20). Subsequently, while transferring funds to the exchange, the customer's account was instantly frozen. The exchange's support team reported that the assets were marked as “high risk” because part of the funds' movement came from an address marked by AML providers as belonging to malicious actors. TRACE specialists conducted an in-depth on-chain analysis, tracked the entire chain of asset movement, and determined their original origin. The team found that the wallet of the decentralized Bridge service was mistakenly flagged in the databases of most AML providers, which led to the blocking of the client's assets without proper justification. Based on the evidence gathered, TRACE specialists communicated with AML providers, the exchange, and service representatives, proving the illegality of the markings and the legality of the assets' origin. As a result of the TRACE team's work, the unlawful markings were removed from the Bridge service wallet, the client's account was unblocked, and USDT 100,000 was returned in full.

// FAQ

Yes, our experts have experience in successfully recovering stolen crypto assets. We work with various types of incidents and have an 83% success rate.
An analytical report is an official document that contains a complete analysis of the incident, transaction tracing, identification of attackers, and recommendations for asset recovery.

The analytical report is used when interacting with exchanges and centralized services - this allows you to quickly block stolen assets. Also, the information provided in the report allows law enforcement agencies to respond quickly to return assets to the affected party.

All data is stored on secure servers and is only accessible to the team conducting the investigation. We comply with GDPR and international standards. You can request the deletion of your personal data at any time.

Yes, it is possible. We work with specialized transaction analytics services and collaborate with law enforcement agencies in many jurisdictions—this allows us to identify wallet addresses associated with mixing services. Before beginning an investigation, we inform the client of the chances of recovering the crypto assets and agree on all further steps.

  • A simple case takes 3-4 weeks.
  • Cases of moderate complexity can take up to 2-4 months.
  • Complex cases requiring international cooperation take 6 to 12 months.

We always assess investigation timelines on a case-by-case basis after a preliminary review of the incident.

Yes, any user can submit a direct request to an exchange asking for a temporary block on assets if they were withdrawn by fraudsters to exchange or centralized service addresses. However, an exchange will not block funds based on your description alone - you need a detailed visualization of the stolen assets movement route, an analytical report, and AML-system flagging of the attacker addresses.

The most common reasons for blocking are suspicion of money laundering (AML checks), participation in sanctioned transactions, receiving funds from high-risk sources, inconsistency of KYC data provided, and violation of the platform's terms of use. For each case, an individual strategy is developed to restore access or unblock assets.

In some cases a user may try to complete re-verification or provide additional documents. However, any incorrect communication with support can complicate the situation and lead to a permanent block of virtual assets. Contacting TRACE specialists allows you to avoid mistakes and significantly increases the chances of a quick unblock.

We provide a detailed preliminary analysis of each case and give an honest assessment of the recovery prospects. If the assets are successfully blocked on an exchange or centralized service, the chances of recovery are very high. If funds were routed through mixers or are held on decentralized addresses, complexity and timelines increase - but our experience allows us to find solutions even in such cases.
